End of daylight saving time in EU, Switzerland and Norway!

Post by Quork on Sat Oct 27, 2012 10:33 pm

As of EU directive 2000/84/EG (and ammendments 2001/C 35/07 and 2006/C 61/02) daylight saving time ends on the last sunday of october at 01:00 UTC. Or shortly put: Take yer clocks and rewind them 1hr.

Funny,I felt quite happy about "putting the clock back" until you mentioned the words "EU directive".

Put that way, I don't bloody well want to do it now!! Twisted Evil

Well, the night will be longer for once, but for many people this will mean both going to work and returning home when its stil / already dark outside. Never thought I'd use that word, but the douchebag, who wanted to save money by inventing this, did NOT think about other douchebags, who will actually steal anything that's saved. Or is this the reason?

In my opinion, daylight saving time is the same thing as storage heaters - a relic from (very) different times. Useless today. Though, on an interesting sidenote, the storage heater might yet see a renaissance; this time not to unload the day peak into the night, as was sensible with conventional electricity generation, but to react towards the variable input of wind and solar energy.

Yes, the solar energy sounds reasonable (although I think it is quite irrelevant whether you will produce the same amount of energy between 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. or between 7 a.m. - 4 p.m.). I am, not quite sure about the wind energy though, the wind is often hard to predict and as far as I know, it does not stop blowing when it's dark / light outside... Surprised

I'm sure it's only people in the British Isles that have to obey EU directives. Personally, i think it's just a local of people in Brussels having a laugh. "Right lads, how can we annoy people today? Ah yes....I know. From 3:30 on Tuesday, all onions for sale must have at least 15 layers, or be clearly marked as a sub-onion. How are we doing on the compulsory shade of yellow for all official daffodils? Still shortlinting...? Cary on!"

The clock in my bathroom (seriously- i'm not good getting out of bed in the morning so it's all a bit to-the-second getting out on time) is still on GMT anyway- I only look at the "Big Hand"

Of course such a storage heater wouldn't switch on and off on fixed times but would be informed remotely. In most cases, at least in Germany, this technology is there all the same; where there are two electricity meters for cheap tariff and high tariff, they are usually selected by a tone frequency impulse.

Ad British Isles and the EU: It's weird to hear, of all people, a UK citizen criticize the EU - without having any negative feelings towards the inhabitants of the UK (!) I do have strong feelings about the UK itself, which is quite parasitary in the EU. Take everything they can, give as little they can (that infamous UK-discount when it comes to EU-contributions)... If it were for me, the UK might well leave the EU even today; I'd just hope they'd remember to take their goddamn deregulated greedy lobbying financial industry with them...

Just don't get me wrong, I like the UK with its multifacetted culture, history and people, and it hurts me as a European to see the current course of action...

Very Happy What I'm saying is, you don't HAVE to be a UK citizen to hate bureaucrats, but if you are it helps.

I lived in England for a long time, it was the penpushers and a***holes who helped me decide to leave. Ireland was a way better place to be 20 years ago, but we need to be careful not to let the creeping, petty meddling from politicians and top civil serpents blight our lives. It's starting to happen.

Actually, we love bureaucracy! Just not other people's.... As the country that invented pointless bureaucracy and red tape, it rankles when some other folk try it on.... charlatans!

I cannot quote the statute or law, but nearly all of America goes on "Daylight Savings Time" Sunday at 0200. That is GMT -6 for me.

Well as our clocks go back one hour, on the other side of the world in Sydney I believe theirs goes forward one hour as they are coming into the summer stage.

I couldn't see why we had to continue chuffing around with the clocks. Some say it's for the farmers, but on my farm the animals don't know what time it is anyway. And neither do I: the only difference I see on daylight-saving day is that the TV programs are all messed up.
But someone must be gaining from this intrusion into our daily routines, and I think it's the clock makers. When clocks were beautiful pieces of mechanical excellence, they wore out, and had to be replaced. Now we have digital clocks keeping time well, and the only bit to wear out is... the buttons which are needed twice a year to reset the time.

Vote for "conspiracy theory of the year" _ That's the best I heard for a while Very Happy

It really is silly changing the clocks. Time works seamlessy in the background for all other species. Even apes don't have wristwatches. Labelling time (ie "naming the hours") is a man-made construct, and if it is right in any sense it should be right all the year round.
Did our ancestors give the sundial a twist about halloween time? I don't think so.
