Re: BVE Cornwall: Current WIP

So, I've been doing a little (lot!) work on the route over the last week Smile
This is the visible side of the results (We now have a mainline path through Laira Junction):

Slightly less visible, but still very important-
* All stations & brightness/ weather effects shifted to the start of the routefile.
* Passing trains shifted to the start of the routefile.
* Various sections of code cleaned and tidied considerably.

All of this, and the changes I made before I started on the 81xx in a major way mean I'm now at the stage where I've got about 90% of the route back into a releasable state.

Otherwise, I'm still working on the 81xx, although I've currently hit a small snag with OS_ATS's sound handling. Something the cutoff is doing affects the volume of the motor sounds, and this doesn't play well with the kludge I've had to implement to get them mostly synced with the wheel rotations.

Cheers

Great looking dirty weather there, all too real. Still, we're used to it now. Its gonna be a good job when you release it.

Yes, Graymac's beaten me to it. I can imagine you've taken your inspiration for this from the recent weather we've been having...! Great work. Somehow I feel the winter isn't over yet...!

Hang on a minute, this can't be the same location can it?!

Just thought I'd show off the 1960's version of this junction Smile
Sadly, the starting point is at the signal just before this, so nothing really before the screenshot, and I'll admit the background picture is on the list of things to change, but I have to say I'm pleased with the way things have turned out.

So, I haven't quite finished the 81xx yet Sad
Things mostly work on that front, and Hijau Kuda has been a great help in tidying up the code and fixing some issues with the cabview.

I'm hoping for a releasable version this month, although I make no warranties, implied or otherwise on that statement Shocked

On the flip side, I'm continuing to work on the route itself, and have spent several hours over the last few days on the start of this bus:

Still needs wheels & mirrors, roof furniture and detailing, but it already looks infinitely better than what it's replacing Smile

This is the result of a considerable amount of work on the exit to Devonport Tunnel:

A new retaining wall on the left, another council block modelled, houses and trees placed in the appropriate locations, and things look ten times better than they did before Smile

So, I do like unusual screenshots Very Happy
This screenshot shows a much refurbished overbridge at Dockyard station, *but* we're actually looking backwards towards Plymouth:

This is all part of my overall aim to get everything looking great in a 360 degree view from track level, and I think you'd be forgiven for thinking that this was facing the right way Shocked
Things generally look pretty good, even when flying above the loco, although going higher still does show some of OpenBVE's limitations.

Being in a city means that there are houses everywhere. This little number has been occupying me for the last couple of days:

I suppose what's interesting here, is that I'm again trying to show some of the building blocks that go into making up what you see on screen.
The way I've evolved to do things, tends to be building a major feature (Road, house group etc) as a single larger object, either in one lump or grouped in an animated file, rather than positioning every single house as it's own freeobj command Smile

A 70% complete Dockyard Station (Facing the wrong way again, but this shows off what I've been doing to its best advantage):

The left side of the track is largely complete, but on the right a house row and some ground needs adding after the road.

I'm aiming to try and get something put up some time after the bank holiday- Refurbing 600m worth of track doesn't seem like much, but if I carry on going, then it'll be months before you see anything more from me, and even then it'll not be much more than double this length Laughing

Bridges are a PITA to build Very Happy

This shot from just past Keyham Viaduct shows quite how much work has gone into this small segment. Again, nowhere near finished, but looking much better than it ever has done before!

Yeah, certainly, it might have been an unpleasant sensory sensation in the lower end of the digestive tract, but it was definitely worth the work!

So, work is continuing at a very decent pace Smile
The improved section of line from Devonport to Keyham is now in what's very much a tidying phase, and I've spent the last couple of days working on some signal boxes:

Not quite finished yet, need some ridge tiles adding to the roof of both boxes, but these will be going at the Royal Albert Bridge & Liskeard, and are much better replacements for the existing objects.

So, the next job is the refurbishment of Keyham station to current standards (Again!).
First job was to fix the curves & the pointwork at the start of the station:

Work has been very much ongoing this week.
The initial entry into Keyham is looking much better, but nowhere near complete:

Keyham Signal Box has also been built to the now demolished prototype:

Much better Smile

Some work on the exit to Keyham this time:

Completely new terrain work and bridge (Excuse the 37, I was using it for height testing on the bridge!) & the house on the corner added. Still missing an awful lot of stuff mind!

So this might not look much, but I've gone and built the first part of the Weston Mill Viaduct in full 3D.

100 vertices, 98 faces in this 50m girder section alone Shocked
Still need to build the vertical latticework, but this was the most complicated part of the viaduct.
Looks incredibly nice though, no nasty transparencies here Very Happy

So, I've spent another couple of days on the vertical latticework:

I've also changed the texture to greyscale, although I'm not absolutely convinved by either.

Next job is to add the horizontal latticework, before starting to think about the bridge deck. The support pillars will come after that, but the aim is for absolute quality Smile
I could go a lot faster with this refurbishment, but it wouldn't look anywhere near as tasty!

Adding a few extra pixels on the texture to have this end trapezium look acceptable would do much more for realism at way lower an efficiency price than having so many vertices in the girder. IMHO at least.

Try the coloured texture with saturation toned down by a half or so?

I have driven this route and I must say, it's looking better than it did before.

Nice work Chris

OK, so getting nastily complicated now!

The texture at the end of the main girders has been tweaked a little, but for the most part it's hidden inside the pillar- I decided to build these first to try and get the ends right.
The girder texture is attempt #3, basically saturation of #1 down by approx 75%- Still not entirely happy, but looks better again.

The next job is going to be building the cross girders- 11 of these, at four faces each Surprised
I then need to think about building the two approach brick arch sets- They're just a generic stone at the moment, as well as fiddling with the scenery underneath here.

Cheers
