BVE Trainsim 5.2 Released

Post by lonelyinardwick on Mon May 07, 2012 12:38 am

Mackoy has just released version 5.2 of his BVE Trainsim, his main changes including enchancing of train physics, some added back from BVE4, there are also changes to the way the announcements are played. If end-user decides to jump to a station, the train announcements stop and the station announcements is played (or something like that*)

* I haven't revised my Japanese lately *trying to read Mackoy's recent post*.

But the English version of program had already been released, so it's good. He has also updated his editing guide, but instead of Michelle's way of explaining it oneself, he realised there were a number of other developers who had done the job for him. Because you'd notice that most of these Japanese BVE websites include comprehensive guides on how to develop x and y. They're all in Japanese, of course.. They're all located in his new BVE5 WikiWiki, which also includes own database of new BVE5 scenarios. You'll also notice he emptied almost everything from his cool.ne.jp homepage with only the links to his new homepage remains, because by 20/5/2012 Cool Online will cease service (need not to worry because his BVE2 and BVE4 stuff has also been archived on the new website):

Not sure if I'll even consider changing to using BVE 5 unless it is the next best thing since sliced bread, quite happy with Open and the version I have already, however I am open to reading some reviews.

You can watch a number of BVE5 videos on YouTube, if you search them then there are lots of them. I did a review here on the BVE 5.1, you can read that.

As BVE5 stands at present my latest work (WIP) would be greatly impoverished by it. No externals for one. I actualy managed to get a copy downloaded and installed (a nightmare with no readable documentation) and I was unimpressed by the rendition of Keisi 3500 route (apologies if that's wrong, not enough writing to tell if that's the name of the route or the train). It may improve with time but I'm sticking to this Open program, under whatever name it is given, for the sake of my work. I respect my stuff so it deserves the best. 'nuff said!

I still don't see what's much different about it, it is obvious that it has some improvements since bve4 but honestly what are the benefits in using it? I am quite happy with using open and indeed open has some very useful building commands that bve doesn't. Not to mention openbve is a lot more user friendly and doesn't have that silly stickman bobbing up and down Razz

The silly stickman is a G indicator and is usefull to those whom go by the rules, IE passenger compfort, bve5 is loved by many in foreign countrys but as for over here we are still pondering, most developers have already decided to ditch bve5 for openbve due to externals etc.. But if mackoy now see's an oppertunity to take up the ideas we as a community wanted when bve4 was around maybe we could see some really good advances within the mext year or so, already big time developers are creating BVE5 (:

Or, we do what we've done before.. as in, make Open compatible with BVE5's routes ^^

If you think I'm ****** around changing the best part of 2000 object file to .x file format to please the bve5 mob you can dream on, matey!!
The main drawback with BVE5 is no externals. In its present form it's a poor relation to Open and MSTS, end of.

BVE5 is a driving simulator, not as train viewer. Whatever you do to your 2000 in relation to BVE5 is by any means coincidental to what you may consider a "poor relation". You obviously don't know much about Japanese simulators and its impact.

I don't need to know. I'm offering country specific rail simulations for a demographic which expects all the trimmings, such as externals and the first thing customers want to do is compare it with MSTS, in terms of facilities and graphics.
And though I am not building particularly for the Japanese market I had an email not long ago from Japanese user who said the product was better than the Japanese sim.
By all means enjoy BVE5 if that's what you are satisfied with. But to suggest a convergence of future (if any) versions of Open towards BVE5 makes a nonsense of the whole point of a different sim.

If only Mackoy's BVE5 supported the facilities for the externals. In a perfect world the OpenBVE maerial would be compatible and Mackoy would be the perfect person to take the sim into the future. The sad fact is that the two have diverged so far that there is only the option of going for one or the other.

Actually a good point- if it did do externals i could see a lot more people trying it. It has (in comon with BVE4) the fact that we can't really interact with it's creator and that can be a distraction maybe. Remember the old TSC forum? People used to discuss using the thing, not what it did/didn't or should/shouldn't do.

There can be externals except for player's train, why do you need externals anyway in BVE5? BVE Trainsim has always strictly been limited to cab view for good.

It's Mackoy's choice entirely. What I like about the externals is the enhanced experience of seeing the route and rolling stock from another perspective. Microsoft's sim offers the facility and although I'm no lover of Microsoft I would be reluctant to put the clock back and revert to a "cab only" product. OpenBVE gives this functionality free and with better graphics than the MS game.
It's a no brainer, really.

It isn't just the new camera that sold me, it is also the way you can add commands like translate, scale etc. As a developer it makes what would normally be a tedious process less tedious. I consider openbve to be more developer friendly than it's predecessor.
