Frontal in Amsterdam

Post by busheyheath on Sun Apr 22, 2012 9:20 am

Yesterday 21 April, at abt. 18.00 local time, a local train from Amsterdam, on its way to Uitgeest, bumped frontally into an Intercity train from Den Helder heading for Amsterdam. For a yet unknown reason both trains were on the same track. the impact was not very fast, because both drivers tried to brake, and there is no derailment. Still, over 100 passengers in both trains were wounded. About 40 of them had to be admitted to a hospital.

I would say either due to either signaller being a lemon, and signalling one train "wrong line" without checking nothing is coming. Or due to a software glitch, or points failure.

Small update: 1 dead, 10 still in hospital, driver failure of the local train heading West, probably due to low sun. Tha automatic tripping system there is not working below 40 km/h, so the train was not driving fast.

So he passed a signal at Danger? Or he was routed wrong?

I happen to know the tracks there. It's a track bed of 6 to 8 parallel tracks, and trains there are led both ways sometimes. It's a switch paradise. At the time of the accident the westbound driver may have to look into a low-standing sun right before him/her. IMO, the safety precautions on this piece of track are well beneath standard.

Im also thinking though, If theres a train coming, why would the points be set for the line the other train is waiting for a signal at? If you were to wait at that red signal, and the other train is already pathed, it's still going to hit you... Just at a different place.
