Texture Store?

Post by Dexter on Fri Apr 20, 2012 1:41 pm

The website with textures actually brought one idea my own way. What if we decide to create our own picture database? I mean, some of us have cameras and others don't, we make a lot of photos some of which never get used anyway. As there is often a texture shortage and lots of searching for stuff, why don't we help each other and create a texture share point? Your opinions?

One question remains though, where do we place the photostack?

I am pretty sure that the domain would not be a problem - but we will need an admin for that site and I would probably create an entrance portal from here... only with categories, maybe?

I'd be more than happy to look after it, and allow people to use a user-interface to upload and all...aswell and if you like 'moderators' to delete images that seem inappropiate.

Post by mobile1 on Fri Apr 20, 2012 5:08 pm

Brilliant idea, i have masses of pics taken solely for producing objects mostly high resolution, I would love others to have the benefit of these...we would need to specify max file size ( bigger the better )...and of course file type...regards

Good point there, I think this can be determined after we know how much space is available for us...
And If I can have my say, Jamie would be a very good help; because he is a good photographer and as far as I know, he can also do lots of things with administration. Smile

Righto all,

I have more-or-less setup the website and I was wondering what sortof 'sections' there should be. Or better still, would anybody like to join the website and help out now? Smile

As far as space goes, the limit for one image is 20MB, however please try not to aim for that limit. The server is limited to 30GB, but I want this part of the server to keep to 5GB...maybe a tad more if needs be.

I might try, but I am not sure how familiar I would be with the setup... I'd rather see Jamie or whoever thinks will be good at this position. Very Happy

Attractive as the idea may seem it is really a bit like reinventing the wheel. There are tons of pics on google images which are useful as a starting point. Of course you have to do some work to edit them and size them etc. but the quantity available is considerable. Of course it would be mainly useful to have some very specific railway specialist textures, but for buildings, people and most scenery google images and your own simple camera is the way to go.

So, has anything been done on the subject then?:-) I would maybe suggest one rule for the texture usage... that would only be mentioning the texture source (so that the website bevomes well-known...)

Yes. However I'm having issues with the user registration email stuff, hence why i've not posted a link yet. As far as texture usage goes, perhaps maybe the website and the person who contributed the texture?

I am not too sure about writing also the author of the texture... the website definitely, but imagine you would also be abliged to write the name of every single picture you use - I don't think it is possible to remember it all. Very Happy
I am trying to take rather a practical view of the thing, because if you used like 50 textures, there is a high chance of forgetting one of the authors. This could cause the users trouble if the author felt offended by it...
Have you tried to employ Jamie? Smile

Re Texture store

Post by mobile1 on Sat Apr 21, 2012 5:57 pm

Hi all, just a thought, because of all of the past problems we have all had in this area, why not give the pics or textures free of copyright ( providing they are your own ) to, say, bveworldwide texture section or something on those lines, i for one would not object to giving the copyright of my pics/texture to anyone who wanted to use them, If i had some pics/textures that i wanted to keep for myself then i wouldnt post them....regards

@mobile1: Yes, we want to give textures out for free, of course... I am suggesting that there should be only a rule of mentioning the download address, so that it becomes well known. The rules should, however, be a subject to discussion. We shall see... Smile

Right,

Well the register emails are still buggered up, and I have yet to solve them...you can now register, and I will accepted accounts. Smile

Here's the link:
http://www.tinworkx.com/bve/texturecentre/

There is still lots tobe setup however and licences and all that mumbojumbo tobe decided! - So more disscussion is still needed!

Thanks,

Bruce.

EDIT: I have found the bug! Arrrghhhh....its VERY basic!!! Now just to fix it....
