Guess the station!

Post by viccylinefan on Mon Feb 27, 2012 8:34 pm

I've thought long and hard for an alternative to the station name game, and it's guess the station! This will be much more fun i think... Very Happy

RULES:
Picture must be attached to a new station.
It can be from any era. Steam, diesel, electric.... Your choice!
It can be from anywhere in the world (please specify the country if its not from the UK).
Any clues giving away the station name e.g. Station nameboard, destination indicators on platfoms or trains must be covered up to prevent cheating!
The 1st person who gets the answer right will post the next picture.

So, who wants to start us off? (The original Station Name Game is still open for now).

Let the guesses come rolling in! Very Happy

I wondered if some of the more quick-witted observers might have tried a map ot Irish Rail's website and looked up google images to see if their guess was right.

It is Westport, County Mayo, the last station on that line from Dublin.

I'm disappointed with the lack of effort there. Some of you need to get beyond the M25 a bit more often! Twisted Evil

As no-one got it right I set the NEXT one. And it's in England this time. This is a view facing north.

Doesn't having a station name nameboard visible in the picture make it a bit easy? I mean, I know we did badly with the last one, but we were hoping to retain a little dignity.... Very Happy

More effort needed with the blurring, graymac. Wink

Used to be my local station, Cheltenham Spa is correct. It was Cheltenham Lansdown Road. There were three stations once in the town, St James, Lansdown Road and Malvern Road. Suburbs at Leckhampton and Charlton Kings also had stations as did the Racecourse (now part of Glos & Warwickshire Rly).

Well done bvetmd! As you guessed the answer correctly first, you can post a station picture!

If you can read that. Then I think you need to be studied by some scientists...

No, it's not supernatural forces, the pic was changed, link now shows original (without added blur on the nameboard)

Admittedly it's easier to 'read' something when you already have a theory as to what it says....I thought I recognised the station as Cheltenham Spa anyway, but the length and shape of the blurred words on the sign gave me the confirmation!

It reminds me somewhat of the old railway eye-sight test, consisting of reading letters (of gradually decreasing size) from a board on the wall. The board of letters used was always the same, so those with rather questionable eye-sight were taught it by their colleagues, and learnt it off by heart for the day of the test! Sadly (well, ok - fortunately) someone spotted the flaw in the test, and the letters are now changed regularly. However there are still railway employees who can quote the original set of letters by heart...

I can't divulge my top secret methods of tracing info. If you knew it I would have to kill you Very Happy Could've spied for Rupert Murdoch!!

Here's a train leaving a station, you can't see much of the station but the clues are in the pic. The river crossing and large stretch of water are significant. Good luck!
