Reviving an abandoned LU line: Northern Heights

Post by busheyheath on Sat Jan 07, 2012 6:40 pm

The LU Northern Heights line was a project of the newly-formed LU company in 1924. An act of 1936 (New Works program) made it possible for LU to start building a line from Moorgate through the old GNCR tunnels to Drayton Park. Although these tunnels were built to recieve standard railway stock, the line was to be run by LU tube stock. It was supposed to run from Drayton Park via a new surface station next to Finsbury Park station, and hence over the existing LNER tracks to Highgate (the old surface station), and then to Finchley Central. The single-track via Mill Hill to Edgware would be doubled, and finally he line would proceed on new tracks to Bushey Heath, via a bored tunnel to reach Elstree South.
Unfortunately, in 1940 WW2 broke out, and after 1945 the line was abandoned due to new Green Belt regulations. Most of the line was removed afterwards, and the remnants still can be seen along the "Parkland Walk" from Finsbury Park to Highgate.
In 2009 I built this line with the help of many UK developers, researchers and other friends, and after a visit to parts of the route. This moment I have a line which can be driven, but it does not look right for a train with externals. I'm currently fixing that. You may expect some pics of the present route, but they are all taken from behind or from the cab.

OK, thanks. This is the view from the 1959 train at Moorgate. The train will cross the double cross to the left (NB) tunnel.

The 1959 stock was provided by Tom Beevers, who did a great job!

In the tunnels between Moorgate and Drayton Park. Note the large bore, they were built to receive surfacestock!

Currently working on the Drayton Park-Finsbury Park section. I will have to improve the view to the left (too many tracks to make) and the main line station. I will post a pic when I'm finished.

The Finsbury Park station was to be located at the Eastern end of the existing main line station. In 1939 quite a lot was already built:

I had to build the station from only that picture. There was no platform building, so I imagined that it would have been made by Charles Holden, with this result. I managed to include the old cinema, now a pinball casino:

Oops....
The train in Stroud Green station. Platforms too short! Another to-do on my list...

Possible, thanks. But I think it's better to lengthen the platform. The original platforms were longer indeed.

Tom Beevers sent me this train, which he developed with a collegue, for testing end 2009. I don't know if Tom issued it somewhere, but I may use it with the route I think. It is running OK.
