BVEC_ATS plug-in - CAWS implementation

Post by graymac on Wed Dec 31, 2014 4:00 pm

Just to show how it will look when the BWR2015 upgrade is ready to roll . . .  not too long to wait now!
Thanks to Chris Lees for his work on the BVEC_ATS plug-in and the TrackGen upgrade allowing non-UK gauges to be modeled accurately.

Looking great =D

On a side note - I know you're far more about route creation than route use, but... Try to look into your braking behaviour. "That's a brake valve, not a water pump" is a common phrase for this Wink Go into a brake setting and *let it take effect*. Just observe and wait before you carefully adjust if it is too strong or too weak. Going in and out all the time puts a strain on the vehicles, decreases comfort dramatically and also is not good for the brake system - not so much with modern vehicles like this one, but in old carriages, especially if they have no MP, just a BP and also in cargo carriages which usually have only a BP air is a resource more limited than one might think. You can't get more pressure into the brake cylinders than is in the carriage's reservoir. And especially with block brakes, there's just so many braking's worth in the reservoir.
And with even older carriages, if you have single-release brakes, going out of a brake setting is a never-nae-no-go.

The "AI" auto-pilot was doing the driving for that video Embarassed
I had to be "elsewhere" at the time, working the video screen grab software Basketball
I promise you, honestly, I would never wear out brake valves like that!

Quork - I thought about that but that's the Artifical Intelligence driving, so the effect is increased

Oh my... First of all, sorry for imputing you braked like that!

So I guess we should re-explain the abbreviation AI in the OpenBVE documentation? The I obviously stands for "impertinence" Twisted Evil

Perhaps re-assign the function as "AIC" - asshole in charge Razz

But, to be fair, the AI is very useful when we want to go "outside" the cab, to observe fly-bys and suchlike. Or watch a run while eating dinner - no, I don't but I COULD if I wanted to!!!
It works on some sort of clever algorithm, I suppose, and though the result gives reasonable time keeping, observance of speed restrictions and allows the train to stop at the right place,  it wasn't made to portray the control usage the same as a "real" driver should operate.

That's probably true =) Though I never used the AI. It's deactivated in the highest realism setting (I'm not sure what it was called exactly... Didn't change it since I installed OpenBVE the first time, that's quite some time ago Laughing)

The main problem to it seems to be that it's rather too quick acting.  If there were a way to make it a little more tolerant a have a little bit of lag in it's reactions, it's be more "watchable"

Yeah, an adjustment frequency of once every some five seconds would probably already make it better... On the other hand, such systems always suck. Also the professional ones, I'm talking the speed keeping/target speed systems on real railway vehicles. Dunno what they're called in English correctly. They simply don't have the foresight to act properly and calmly and thus always are on the rather hectical end... Even those systems which are for completely automatic work and thus have to know the route with topographical data etc.; I have never ever seen a driverless system with an acceptable driving style. Neither the Nürnberg metro, nor the Dockland Light Railway in London, nor the Skytrain (which is a monorail) at Frankfurt airport.

Do please start a new topic if you want to discuss the AI in detail, though how anything can be done to change it is anyone's guess. I'm only concerned with the things I have control over here, stuff that applies to my output.
